Re: OMG, Off The Rails!

Tarlo Farm: How old is your friend? I ask this because some studies have indicated that when people get "old", like into their 70s and beyond, they often become more gullible. Hence all the older people who are easily conned by various scams. This could be an extension of that perhaps? But...

Re: Terror in Paris

Plenty of the members of Islamist terrorist groups have been grown men with graduate degrees. It's just not that simple when it comes to a religious ideology. And many of them also feel unwelcome and unable to practice their religion in the "West," and have come to hate us. Ever since 911...

Re: Terror in Paris

Bombing is not going to solve the problem. The problem is youth who see no future. This is what needs to be addressed. I disagree--that's way too simplistic. Religious ideology can make a huge difference in how youthful energy is directed. Islam has never been a religion of peace and never modified...

Re: Terror in Paris

Islamic "radical" fundamentalism and ISL are not synonyms. ISL is a subset of radical fundamentalism and actively seeks (declares) to establish a caliph/caliphate and "end times". "In November, the Islamic State released an infomercial-like video tracing its origins to bin ...

Re: Terror in Paris

It occurred to me last night that the US would probably experience even more violence than we do now from gangs, and mentally unstable youth if we didn't have athletics. I don't watch football except for the Super Bowl. But imagine if we didn't have football or basketball or hockey: where would all...

Re: Terror in Paris

Ya, if you take the long view of history the middle east has had it's fair share of wars of conquest, ideology, etc., just like the rest of us. Didn't need the west to create it for them. The Siege of Vienna, in the mid-1500s was when the Ottoman Turks came close to over-running central Europe, for...

Re: Terror in Paris

The western world is reaping what its been sowing since we butted in to that region so long ago. I feel that even if the western world had not 'butted in' many years ago, groups like ISIS would still exist and would still be trying to build their "empire". The US and other countries simpl...

Re: General photography related stuff thread

Tequila Mockingbird--I'd find a nice, beginning Photoshop course and take it. One of the first things you'll learn how to do is to re-size. As for me, I've not been shooting much for many reasons. But how I mostly use Photoshop is this: for most photos, I use unsharp mask or smart sharpen pretty muc...

Re: What will it take for gun lovers to say ENOUGH

I wonder why you figure these two people somehow == "the gub'ment", but you do not. This place fascinates me. It is becoming way too much work to have to clarify every single thing that I say because it appears to be misconstrued or taken out of context. Nope. You just weren't clear, that...

Re: What will it take for gun lovers to say ENOUGH

Other things to bear in mind are that Australia, like the U.S. was a frontier country (and thus has similar "brave man alone" mythos to our "wild west"). They have wide open spaces with animals that need handling. (Not as many really dangerous animals as the U.S. perhaps. I don'...

Re: What will it take for gun lovers to say ENOUGH

Carpevita: I think handguns should be banned but hunting weapons allowed in certain circumstances--very much as it is in the UK. They allow handgun use for target shooting, I think, but the gun must be kept in a secure locker at the gun range.

Re: What will it take for gun lovers to say ENOUGH

Wow. I could have sworn that I posted a quote by former Republican Chief Justice of the SC, Warren Burger, about the 2nd amendment, but I don't see it. A fraud on the American public.” That’s how former Chief Justice Warren Burger described the idea that the Second Amendment gives an unfettered indi...

Re: What will it take for gun lovers to say ENOUGH

And so we have someone who believes handguns should be outlawed with very few exceptions and someone else who agrees and a third person who says tin's not about an outright ban and that's a red herring... And you wonder why I don't trust the gub'ment... What is your point here? As I said, there is ...

Re: What will it take for gun lovers to say ENOUGH

For the most part, the warrant must state the probable cause (what are you looking for and why) for the search and it must be signed by a judge and is good for usually only a few days. When you watch entertaining shows like Law & Order, what you see isn't always "legal" in the real wo...

Re: What will it take for gun lovers to say ENOUGH

I have always stayed out of the political forum because I cannot articulate my thoughts. I believe handguns should be outlawed. Period. Nobody needs a gun. Period. I will cut some slack for hunters. But normal, every day people do not need guns for self-defense or to protect their homes. And certai...

Re: What will it take for gun lovers to say ENOUGH

We are obviously on opposite sides of this topic but I agree with your last statement too. FYI, I am not a gun owner at all but I do believe in being allowed to have them. So, okay, your example of the driving too slowly, I might want to do that to people every day on my commute but I know that in ...

Re: What will it take for gun lovers to say ENOUGH

Kathy, I'm afraid no amount of carnage will be enough because we are dealing with fanatics. We will have to have a ground-roots campaign that will overwhelm the gun fanatics. As with many such issues, it will take a lot of education and a change of consciousness before anything substantial is done. ...

Re: No one has ventured here yet?

Don't worry. The political forum is a place to engage in discourse. You don't have to be right-leaning to engage here! I seem to recall that you were one of the most vocal members of UDBB saying you wanted no political forum. And now you're an admin of one? That's pretty weird . . . I believe that ...
