Just want to gush for a minute
Long time lurker coming out of the shadows because I know you folks will appreciate how over the moon I am... A couple of weeks ago I had a lesson with my coach-probably the first one in over a year. I tend to just plug away by myself and I sometimes lose track of how long it's been since I've check...

As to breeding, buckle up tight. . .
My goal will never be a large scale breeding operation...I just enjoy having a baby around really. I’m also open to suggestions/advice on all things breeding.

I need help naming my farm/soon-to-be-LLC!
Hello all! I'm mostly a lurker but am venturing out of the woodwork because dang it-I need help!! I'm pursuing incorporating my horsey habit and turning my passion into a side hustle (I have a regular full time job but my schedule allows me to have a fair amount of flexibility). I'll be breeding a c...

Re: Headed to Glacier NP
I live in Missoula so I thought I'd chime in. Keep in mind that we have a WICKED fire season-and we haven't gotten much moisture this winter so next summer has the potential to be nasty. The later parts of the summer are always worse than June/early July. The drive up from Missoula is pretty gorgeo...

Re: The Double. Gulp.
I've started several horses in the double and I usually find that if you put it on like it's no big deal and get on a go for a walk the first day, then you can usually ride relatively normally the second day. I think if you make a it a "big deal," they perceive it as a big deal and then i...

Re: The Double. Gulp.
Generally speaking, introduce the full bridle one day a week initially. Ideally 3:1. If you have not held four reins, then do so with two reins onto the snaffle. When riding 3:1 keep the three hand closer to the withers, or do 2:2 (in the schultheis/fillis methods). For sure have the curb chain on,...

Re: The Double. Gulp.
I just did this over the summer. 1. be prepared for sticker shock! The bits are quite pricey but I found the ones I wanted on sale, whew. 2. I was told to put them on, leave the curb loose and no curb chain, my guy hated the curb bouncing around in his mouth, so I put the chain on and lightly kept ...

Re: HDR Padded Raised Bridle
I bought the Plymouth Dressage bridle from SmartPak and was really impressed with the quality of leather for the price-it's quite supple right out of the bag and hasn't really stretched out noticeably. I think it's around $60. Be aware that they do run large so size accordingly

The Double. Gulp.
So my dynamite dressage 'stang is very solid Second level and we are comfortably schooling all of Third. I'm playing with the idea of introducing the double bridle. My reasoning is that 1. Change is challenging for my girl. In a clinic a couple years ago the instructor had me try out a drop noseband...

Re: Spinoff: Introducing the Flying Changes
I found myself nodding and commiserating to most of the issues mentioned. My girl does a funky little skip change at this point-she sort of stalls and sticks a foot down in the middle of the change. Since I work alone most of the time, at this point we spend most of our time working on the pieces bu...

Re: Cross training: Trail riding?
I'm lucky enough to live about 4 blocks from Forest Service land and a river. I try to take everyone out at least once a week. The terrain can get pretty varied (banks, ditches, lots of downed trees...), which I feel helps the horses with coordination and gives them a better sense of where their fee...

Re: Goals Thread...
Goal one: post instead of lurking...so here I am :D For Cara (the midget mustang): CHANGES. We are in flying change hell. Miss Cara is ridonkulously smart so getting her to wait and let me teach her what I'm asking for has been challenging. She has figured out this funky "skip" change wher...
