All of my Roma and slicing tomatoes are ripening at once. Any favorite recipes that use up a bunch of tomatoes? I probably should break out my dehydrator and dry some of the Romas, and make and freeze some salsa. I made pasta sauce last week. I have a large pot of chili on the stove for tonight, whi...

We don't lime pastures out this way; we actually would like the soil to be more acidic. So, I am not speaking from personal experience. But, here is a link to a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for one form of agricultural lime . "Section 3 - Hazards Identification * * * Emergency Overview - T...
I subscribe to A Word A Day , a fun way to expand my vocabulary. After a discussion of the day's word, their email concludes with A Thought for Today. Today's word is "skylark", and this is the thought for today: "Racism tends to attract attention when it's flagrant and filled with in...
I was fascinated watching Trump; he started off fairly under control and spiraled down to rants and jiberish. I am not a big fan of Hilary, but I will vote for her to attempt to keep Trump far far away from the White House.
Crock-Potted Pork Tenderloin. I doubled the dry spices, tripled the garlic, added two bay leaves, and threw in a cup of brown rice & a cup of water towards the end. I didn't bother thickening the gravy. This was a tasty meal for the autumn season.
Our homeowner's insurance went down when we replaced cedar shakes with thirty-year asphalt shingles, thirty some years ago. So, they have lasted thirty years, but will need to be replaced in the next few years. DH is thinking metal roof this time. I read here or on COTH that some colors of metal fad...
kande, it is nicknamed puck board because it is used to line the lower part of hockey rinks. Watch an NHL game to see what kinds of impacts it withstands. Apparently now it is available in a whole array of colors and textures. I don't know what minimum thickness is suggested for horse stalls. If I w...

I just listened to this piece about LED streetlights . I don’t think it should really impact your choice, fergusnc, since your yard light will be on so little. But I thought it had interesting information to add to this discussion in a general sense. “Across the country, more than 10 percent of outd...
Something else to add to your head explosion (sorry) - During our house remodel, I was told that breakers should not be used routinely as switches, because they have only so many "flips" before they wear out and will no longer be reliable for their designed purpose.
In addition to minimizing the wattage used, consider getting a fixture that is fully shielded and points downward. Dark-Sky Org has lots of info on light pollution. Those of us who enjoy gazing at the stars will thank you!
I wonder if your electrician could find something similar to a small breaker box to house the switches. Our exterior breaker panel has a tab on the metal cover that matches a tab on the box, so you could put a clip through the tabs to keep (most) horses away from the breakers/switches.
I agree with practice your backing skills. Also, get really good at hitching/unhitching, unless you leave your truck hooked up all the time. It's good to be able to hook up quickly in case of an emergency. Also, if you have room in your tack area, have something you can sit down on, to put on/take o...
ThinLine is selling a bell boot with a unique fastening system - Gatorbootz . I no longer need bell boots, as my WB is retired, but I thought I'd pass this info to others who may be tired of buying (Davis) bell boots because the velcro tore off. PS - the email I received said save 5% when ordering 1...
Well, do you need enough light to jump, or just enough to see the arena fence? I got by for years with just one yard light along the middle of one long side. I liked the minimal light; I was just doing flat work. I saw a great horned owl take off many times from a cottonwood tree in the back pasture...
A friend of mine uses an ATV to drag her sand arena with a small harrow similar to this and to pull her small manure spreader. Many people around here use ATVs for farm chores. FWIW, my FIL had a blade on the front of his teeny riding lawn mower that did an adequate job plowing up to maybe 5" o...

My poor hand strength also struggles with using leather hole punches, I usually just take it into work and have one of the guys help me out. Hayburner, have you tried the Herm Sprenger Hole Punch ? My hands are no longer very strong, but I can manage with this punch. Pricey, but I think it's worth ...
I'd look for the manufacturer's Material Safety Data Sheet by Googling "(Manufacturer Name) Dimethyl Sulfoxide MSDS" and read up on statements about environmental cautions and disposal first. FWIW, the contents of my small bottle of DMSO disappeared over about a year. I assume it evaporate...
For anyone contemplating ordering Petrie boots, Dressage Extensions is having a two-day sale (through 8/4/16) - $25 off each pair. Code is 25OFF . Sale boots are included.
Vermont artist Joseph Fichter was commissioned to create sculptures of wild horses for new roundabouts at a (near-to-me) exit from I-70. He was inspired by a visit to the Little Bookcliffs Wild Horse Range, which is located a few miles to the north. More info here and a photo gallery of the sculptur...
One of my geldings has been rubbing the top of his tail. I have been using T-Zon , massaging about a nickel-sized dollop into his dock. It seems to be helping. It contains "Australian tea tree oil, 1% hydrocortisine, benzathonium chloride, aloe vera, myrrh, comfrey, goldenseal and conditioning ...
I just picked the first big batch of basil from the garden. So, it's pesto served over zucchini (from the garden) "noodles" and some linguini pasta, for us tonight.
I wonder if she could find someone who is busy getting ready to leave for college, who won't be taking their horse with them but would be happy to have the horse to stay in work with your friend.
Barnaby sounds like a love; I hope he works out to be a wonderful driving pony for you.
Our neighbors when I was a kid had a Newfoundland dog that pulled a pony cart. Your friend would have quite a colorful team if she started driving her Great Danes!
