Re: Meet the Newest Addition to the Farm
You might really like Puppy Culture training series. Jane Killion (When Pigs Fly) follows puppies from birth to 3 years to teach how the foundation skills the first year of life result in awesome dogs for life. I have coonhound scent detection dogs, a couple rescue GSD and working border collies. An...

Re: Vulture invasion
Looks like black vultures in your photo. Opie...black vultures WILL hunt live prey, and a vulture hopping along with a cat is in the process of killing it to eat it. Sounds like that old house may be a colony cat area, so the vultures are taking advantage of an easy food source. The black vultures a...

Re: To shavings/wrap or not to shavings/wrap - Trailering debates
Shavings about 4" deep. My guys will pee in trailer and relax then. I use big flakes shavings, so no dust, or if it seems a batch has some dust, I hose it down gently, not enough to have water running out under it on mats, but to dampen it. Haven't ever seen any dust or debris on the black hors...

Re: Mystery Lameness - Ideas?
Worth checking the shoulder sling. The consistent theme you mention several times is DOWNhill and DOWN transitions. Problems in the shoulder, hard to Dx, but result in horses having difficulty, lameness or reluctance to move downhill or move weight downhill. Could be neuro, muscular or fracture caus...

Re: I've changed my mind about something important.
This is a nice article that may be useful for some thinking on this issue; even though this addresses the fears of euthanasia primarily in rescue, it applies to many situations where we have to make choices for our beloved animals. https://equinerescue.wordpress.com/2015/07/24/and-he-was-gone-peacef...

Re: Success stories for croup-high horses?
I mention the mugging because so many folks believe that treat training in any form produces a bunch of biting, dangerous horses. Well it can...but I work with many animals who WANT to hurt me, and the word "no" or punishers mean nothing other to incite aggressive/defense. And no, they don...

Re: Success stories for croup-high horses?
Kande- you're onto something there! Since I do OC/R+ training with so many wild animals, with some kind of bridge (not always a clicker, but sometimes) I of course do a lot of it with my domestic animals and my horses. And using some of the clicker work itself in the arena does get the horses REALLY...

Re: Success stories for croup-high horses?
Oh, and I like how even in the earlier photo on the forehand, and moreso in the later photos where she is stepping more up, you can tell she has some real smart spring in her gait from that beautiful, awesome hindlimb! You channel that and get her step more through with that power and verve and you'...

Re: Success stories for croup-high horses?
She doesn't actually appear to be that croup high. I school quite a few stock horses/appendix horses, and they have no problems going down hill if you let them! But it is a gymnastic process for them to sit and lift and push from behind rather than just catch themselves in the front. Downhill is a r...

Re: Talk to me about agility
You can learn a lot online these days with good trainers who are using web based communications. Susan Garrett is one of the top handlers in the country, but more importantly, she is a great teacher. You can check out what she offers for those trying to learn some things via distance learning at Say...

Re: Retraining the Reining-trained Quarter Horse
I a, reschooling an ex reiner now. But she is buzzed so I slowed everything down. She'll take a nice contact (3 weeks working now) but it musta looked funny at first to anyone watching....she had been trained to keep her head down so I would gently lift the reins almost straight up and still use bas...
