Re: In which I'm reminded how much horse shopping sucks!

Fatcat I bought my current horse from the breeder and yes - it was a lovely experience, until it wasn't. I did buy a 6 month old colt so the wait to ride was VERY long - mistake #1. The other mistake was buying a horse who ended up having PSSM and shivers. If I had waited till he was at least 3 I w...

Just a comment on horse shopping in general. I learned a valuable lesson on my last horse purchase--find a reputable breeder turning out horses that perform and get one from them. It made the whole experience pleasant and successful. They were very responsive to my inquiries, sending many photos and...

I rinse off when sweaty in the summer after a ride, but only give soap bath once or twice a year. I do wash tails more often as I have mares which means icky pee tails.

I noticed they really like baths since I got an instant hot propane hot water system. Best $140 I've spent.

I would recommend a plain white salt block or plain loose salt. Not a mineral block. Juliet Getty author of Feed Your Horse Like a Horse says those are best for getting salt in a horse without overdoing minerals.

I did a PPE on a 3yo horse I hadn't seen. I know own her :) We did flexions, and subsequently xrays based on those flexions. A 30+yo toothless pony I had did well on soaked Timothy cubes. I'd fill a large, deep rubber tub about half full with them 4x/day. It kept him going for several years at the end of his life, plus by soaking, the NSC levels were lowered for him.
