Aiken, SC and shoes
We are hauling two of our horses down to Aiken from VT for 3 weeks in March! We are so excited to be able to actually ride. At the moment the horses are barefoot and I'm trying to decide if I should have them shod before we go, or if we'll be able to keep them barefoot. Normally during the riding se...

Re: desperately in need of paddock boots
I don't know the perfect boot, but get them too big, wear silk sock liners, and as Hayburner said, smartwool socks. Also, it helps if you keep the boots on a boot warmer/dryer so that they are already warm when you put them on. It will give you almost an extra hour of unfrozen feet. The chemical hot...

Canyon, the sticky stuff lasts for a few days. It probably depends on how many horses you are taking care of, if you are moving hay, and so forth as to how long it would last. It just seems to wear off of my felted wool mittens without any adverse problems.

Heipful idea for those who do their own barn work.
I have seen many ads for the stuff you spray on britches to keep you stuck to the saddle and I thought I'd try it on my mittens and gloves when cleaning stalls and sweeping. The stuff is awesome! No more tired hands from trying to hold onto the pitchfork, wheelbarrow, and broom when doing the barn w...

Re: Do you lock your stirrup leathers into the bar?
In regards to the winter riding boot, I have always used a wider stirrup in the winter just so that I won't get hung up in case of a fall. For the OP I have never heard of a stirrup leather sliding off of an unlocked stirrup bar. Mine are always down and if you were to check many saddles, the stirru...

The deerskin is wearing out. It may have been also exacerbated by a recent unplanned lawn darting last week as I hadn't noticed the tear before. I just thought that repairing it with leather might be uncomfortable.

I had a filly with an umbilical hernia and surgery was not expensive although I can't remember exactly how much it was as it was quite awhile ago. I would also assume it depends on where you live as vet costs vary widely across the country.

I lost my mare due to white line. The farrier resected too much and she rotated and dropped even after being casted. I think it started because of the farrier leaving too long of a toe. I'm still not over it although it happened 3 years ago.

We had a couple flocks of green parrots near Providence, Rhode Island. They may have been conures. They would build their nests around the transformers on power poles I suspect because the transformers must have given off a little heat. They did fine through the winter.
