Re: Dig out the winter gear and finish strong: November/December Goals and Progress

LSP, jingles for all affected. That is just crazy weather. I bought Kyra from a person in Parker. When I went and looked at her (quick 24hr trip), it was 70 degrees when I got there the 1st of February. Very warm. Then by the time I boarded the plane to go home it was snowing. Weather swings like th...

Re: Dig out the winter gear and finish strong: November/December Goals and Progress

Well...I got a text today that Kyra started coughing today. Our weather has been nasty but I braved the roads and went out today. Still quite a snotty nose and I think the coughing is from post-nasal drip. Still no fever. I am not a vet but I listened to her lungs and didn't hear anything ominous in...

Re: You know you're getting old.......

Rockabilly, definitely. Sepsis (usually starting as a consequence of infection) drives the body into an overwhelming inflammatory response. Blood pressure markedly decreases and then you have inadequate perfusion (circulation) to all of the organ systems (kidneys, brain, circulation--heart/lungs), l...

Re: You know you're getting old.......

Oh Rockabilly . Be easy on yourself. You are not lazy. You were septic which affects all major organ systems and they will come back but it will take time.

Huge jingles and energy vibes coming your way.

Jingles for all those humans that need it. Heddy...I hope you are weathering the COVID storm. Demi, good work. Riding dressage is so analytical. We just don't want to drive ourselves crazy...or do we :?: . Kyra is currently on vacation. Our weather went to hell in a hand basket this week. Cold, snow...

Re: Dig out the winter gear and finish strong: November/December Goals and Progress

Sorry Sue. It was relatively nice again today. Mid 40's. That said...the 50 degree day and today's temp's were not enough to clear the arena of the snow, remaining ice...or water. It is a little colder up in the foothills where my barn is. I did get in a ride today anyway. 98% at the walk and the ot...

Re: I have a young horse who circles his head/neck when..

Young horse...ha! My coming 20 y.o. mare still does the head twirl when she is full of herself. She has never done it under saddle...just at liberty or on the lunge line with no side reins. I think this is an expression of them feeling good and saying look at me!

Re: Dig out the winter gear and finish strong: November/December Goals and Progress

So sorry about the phone Chisamba...to an otherwise good day :? . Well, winter appears to have finally arrived. We had an inch of wet snow today. Most melted today but it is supposed to freeze hard tonight. Buggers. I knew there would be no indoor. Now I am trying to dream up exercises to do in her ...

Re: Dig out the winter gear and finish strong: November/December Goals and Progress

Everyone is making so much progress. Mari...that looks like fun. Maybe 30 years ago I would have tried that :? . Kyra continues to do well at the new stable. I am still being pretty amazed as it was a major change of management and food (changed to alfalfa). She did finally meet her other next door ...

Re: Dig out the winter gear and finish strong: November/December Goals and Progress

Chisamba, Caliburn looks great and yes, I would say his topline is much improved. I want to work on that with Kyra. She has those funky camel hump withers then kind of a dippy back. She needs to develop a 'rounder' muscle over the loin. At this new barn she is on alfalfa. I was kind of hesitant but ...

Re: Dig out the winter gear and finish strong: November/December Goals and Progress

Ouch Chisamba. Take care of that shoulder. I am still fighting my hip/back. I think I have trochanteric bursitis and thus far, the PT hasn't helped that. He has worked out some other kinks but the hip is still is not happy. Both hips for that fact but left >> right. I am fine most of the time if I j...

Re: Dig out the winter gear and finish strong: November/December Goals and Progress

Yes exvet, I finally couldn’t take anymore of the very substandard footing. She has survived a lot of years of it and I just couldn’t force the issue any longer unless we just wanted to walk for the foreseeable future. Now, she has lost a lot of free movement due to the weather conditions but so har...

Re: Dig out the winter gear and finish strong: November/December Goals and Progress

Everyone is working so hard :D . All the chestnut beasts (Moutaineer, SF and Anne) look fabulous 8-) . Kyra is just a brown smudge. She loves to roll on turnout and the dirt there kind of stains her coat. It brushes off fine but the color sticks. That is OK…she needs to be a horse. It has been too w...

Re: How do you break up with your farrier?

I sent one farrier a letter. Thanking him for his service but stating my desire to go in a different direction. I believe I called the last one to tell him I had gone over to the dark side (barefoot) which is still where we are at. I do use boots when protection is needed.

Re: Dig out the winter gear and finish strong: November/December Goals and Progress

Jingles for all critters and riders that need it. Well, it would rain buckets now that I have Kyra moved and that means she is stuck in her stall. However, she truly seems to like it. She has only been stalled rarely for 24-48hrs here and there for a clinic, show or illness. I figured by now, I woul...

Re: Dig out the winter gear and finish strong: November/December Goals and Progress

Oh Demi, don’t you just hate that…like where did it come from? I am sure your weather didn’t help. With Kyra, invariably it is tension that causes said jackhammer mode and heavy in the bridle. Way back when, when I hadn’t yet figured out the mouth issue with Kyra, I could not believe such a refined,...

Re: Dig out the winter gear and finish strong: November/December Goals and Progress

Good to hear from some of you again….Goldhorse, Anne and Demi. Well, I got Ms. Kyra moved today. She knew something was up yesterday, when I hauled the trailer to the barn to load up a bunch of stuff. I backed the trailer near her pen to load up a bale of hay and she looked at it like it was an alie...

Re: September - October goals and progress

Whohoo, I got to ride yesterday. I think that was my second ride in two weeks  . The arenas finally got work. It was a pleasant ride but she was a bit resistant in the hand. I didn’t make a big deal out it. Just kept my requests hand forward with lots of leg and of course, attention to straigh...

Re: Dig out the winter gear and finish strong: November/December Goals and Progress

Yikes…already? My goals for Kyra Get her moved to the new barn and settled in. Do lots of hand walking to introduce her to the place. Try for riding 4 days per week (vs current every other day). Without an indoor it will depend some on the weather but she will get out and some kind of in-hand work, ...

Re: September - October goals and progress

According to my rain gage we got 2.25" of rain btw. It rained nonstop for about 36 hours. Yes…since we only get 12-13 inches per year it is so weird to get that much in a day and a half. Jingles that Rudy’s eye continues to clear up.clears up. Kyra did something like that last fall. Not as bad...

Re: Another boarding barn decisions post

Tough isn’t it? I would probably head to the friend’s. Everything is done and you know what you have. Are the arena’s rideable in the average wet weather? Boy, if the other barn isn’t ready that gives an awful lot of unknown’s. I am moving Kyra next week. I am giving up the indoor…which is crappy wh...
