A pasture foaling at 4 a.m. - I'm in love!!! More pics added.
I had a feeling early this morning so I got up and went to check my Shire mare, Kammie. I found her at the back of a lovely, grassy pasture with a wet, newborn filly foal at her side.
I got to watch her suckling for the first time.
Then I went about the task of getting mare & foal back to the barn to rest in the foaling stall. It took about 10 minutes, but I managed because I was so pumped up with excited love of this gorgeous foal. She's a TALL, strapping filly, black/dark bay with a unique 2-part star and 4 whites.

Re: A pasture foaling at 4 a.m. - I'm in love!!!
Once I got Kammie & baby in the stall and settled, I got to bond with the "wee" one (although, she's anything but wee!). I was head-over-heels in love with her full brother, Finn, when he was born four years ago and wondered if I'd be as in love with this foal. I need not have wondered ... I'm absolutely smitten, and so happy it's a girl.
Shortly after she suckled again and passed her meconium, she had her first nap. Look at how unbelievably sweet she is!
I waited awhile before waking up my daughter to meet the filly. The foal was born around 4 a.m. and so I waited until just before 6 a.m. to get my daughter up. She has a big track meet today so needs her sleep ... but, then, she also NEEDED to meet this filly!
We're both absolutely in love with this amazing creature. We have no idea of a name yet so we're going to put some thought into that. She is by the hanoverian stallion, Sir Wanabi, and out of my purebred Shire mare. Her full brother's name is Sir Faramir ("Finn"). I want the perfect name for her so we'll see what sticks. Meanwhile, how am I going to get ANYTHING done today ... ?!!

I'll never forget the birthing of my filly. There is no joy like seeing that.
She's a beauty.

Wow---what a lovely big filly! Kammie looks like the ultimate broodmare.
(Susan, I think she said it is a full sibling, so yes)

Re: A pasture foaling at 4 a.m. - I'm in love!!!
Unfortunately, Kammie had a retained placenta which I didn't discover until I got home from work. The on-call vet and I managed to treat her and get the placenta out intact, though, and Kammie is behaving totally normally. Fingers crossed that nothing untoward comes of this. She's on meds for the next few days and I'll be watching her like a hawk. Thankfully it's now the weekend so work won't get in the way!
Miss Filly Foal is absolutely thriving, full of life & full of pizzazz, and so gorgeous. I'll post more photos when I'm less exhausted!

Oooh! Lovely! Well done Kammie!
Re: A pasture foaling at 4 a.m. - I'm in love!!!
Congratulations! What a pretty foal with such an unusual facial marking. She sure ended up with some bling!
Jingles that Kammie will be ok after retaining the placenta. I know how dangerous that can be, scary.

Day 2 and all is well!
Kammie is being treated after she retained her placenta, but so far so good. We caught it in time and got it all out. She is none the worse for wear, but will be on meds for awhile.
Today they were let out to the pasture. It's a gorgeous, sunny day, and the grass & flowers are beautiful. So is this filly!
She has had a few brief frolics but is sticking close to Kammie.
I love watching them try to reach the grass with their too-long legs!
I'm thoroughly enjoying this sweet filly.

What a cutie!
My favorite part of this age is when they are still learning how to use those long legs and every time they try some new, fancy move they haven't done before they get this expression ... I had no idea I could do that

Well DONE Kammie! So glad all are well, retained placentas are quite common in draft mares and can be very problematic. Fingers crossed no further troubles from that. Kammie looks amazing, beautiful condition, tip of the hat to you

Thanks, Quelah! That means a lot coming from you.
Let me tell you, trying to get 55 ml of liquid antibiotics into a 17.3h 1800 lb draft mare who is NOT interested is proving to be quite the task. She just moves away, even within the stall, and I'm useless to stop her! She does quit with the shenanigans if I sternly reprimand her using my voice, but this is only day 3 of administration ... I have 7 more days to go! Ugh.
But, it's a small price to pay for her health. She's had no untoward after-effects from the retained placenta and is fit & healthy.

The next 3-4 posts will be photos showing the filly at age 3-days. She's unfolding beautifully, and has a lovely personality that is blossoming more each day. I apologize that the photo quality is rather awful. I unexpectedly worked a 12-hr day and didn't get home until 8 p.m. so I was running out of time to take photos in the failing light. All I had quickly on hand was my iPhone, which doesn't cope with action shots particularly in low light. I'm hoping I have a better camera available for my 3-wk-old shots. Oh well, these ones will have to do!
Her trot:
A rather uphill canter!
Posing, and looking gorgeous.

Is this your first filly to breed and raise? She is adorable and gosh you are flushing the mare by yourself? Yes not an easy undertaking especially when momma is distracted by the little one.

Thank you!
This is my second foal since I've been an adult, my third since childhood. But, yes, she's my first filly!
I'm not doing uterine flushes, I'm giving her oral antibiotics. She's not happy about it, but is submitting with a grudge.

Kammie is doing great with no untoward after-effects. Thank goodness!
I have more photos but I'm too tired to upload them tonight (12-hr work day ... unexpected ... again).
I'm thinking of naming her "Lady Galadriel", with Gala as her barn name. My dressage horses all have Lord of the Rings names, except for Panache. Jet's show name is "Roac the Raven" (a Middle Earth character name), Finn's show name is "Sir Faramir", so I looked through the LotR and Middle Earth character names and zeroed in on Galadriel or Eowyn. At first I preferred Eowyn, as Lady Eowyn, but it's harder to say or to shorten into a barn name. Plus, if you follow the character's stores, Eowyn ends up marrying Faramir ... which would have this filly married to her full brother! LOL.
Anyway, I'm playing around with "Lady Galadriel". Still not 100% sure.
