I have a horse for sale and some one is wanting to fly in to try her. She is wanting to fly in for 4 days and vet her the 5th if it works out. Is that many days normal?? I work full time, have 2 young boys and the barn is an hour trip for me....i dont go to the barn that many days in a row and would literally not see my family for almost a week. She sounds like an excellent fit for my mare so im at a loss as what to do.

It sounds excessive to me. Maybe she wants to get to know her?? Have you explained the distance and time problem from your side?

Sounds like two days too many. Was she intending to stay with you? Does she have some other plans while she's in the area? Family? "fly in" via commercial flight? Or private plane?

Honestly, it depends. Do you have many potential buyers in the wings? She sounds like a very serious buyer who doesn't want to make a mistake. She is spending a lot of money - and time - on this venture (talking about flying in, accommodations for a week....). She wants to make sure that she and your horse are a good match. While it is a burden to you, consider the positives here. Balance the need to assure a good match against the burden to you.

I don't think two appointments including riding pus a vet check would be unreasonable. That could take 2-3 days, depending on what could be scheduled. I am assuming the horse is of some value.

It's not your problem how she spends her time outside of the specific appointments you can manage. It is very fair to let her know up front what is possible for you. Certainly, some training barns might be willing to have someone try/ride/lessons for several days (with associated fees). That might not be you.

I admit to flying down the night before, trying a horse, liking her and arranging a vet check for the next day and flying back that same day. But I don't have a lot of time to spare!

Ditto what piedmontfields stated. I've spent quite a bit flying for a potential purchase. I usually knew either immediately or by 2nd ride. The vet exam was final call for me.

I wouldn't turn away or deter a buyer who is willing to go to such lengths to try your horse. She may very well be giving herself extra time in case she needs it, and could make the decision (either way) much sooner. Are you only available to go to the barn in the evening? Does she know this, and does her 4 days span a weekend?

I agree with Wicky and orono.

It's a bit odd, but at the same time, sounds like she wants to make sure it is a fit. Which is a good thing fo everyone involved.

With my new horse I flew up and rode once on my own, went back a couple of weeks later with my trainer for two days. Trainer wanted to ride him two days in a row, back to back. I wanted to be the first one to ride him on day two, because I ride on my own a ton and wanted to know what he would feel like with me "first up".

I have had him for four months now and love him to death. It was definitely worth it to me to take the time to really get to know him.

OK, not to take over the thread, but yes, I bought a new horse!!!!!!! No spots - there could never be another spotted wonder.

I was struggling quite a bit trying to sort out second level over the last year and decided, well, I'm not getting any younger, so ... I bought a schoolmaster. My first ever trained horse 15H of awesomeness. I am so incredibly grateful to have him in my life. I just can't even believe it.

So the little cowpony is wondering what the heck has happened, because suddenly I'm sort of figuring things out

A schoolmaster AND 15 hands! What a find! (No sarcasm at all - I loved having a horse that was under 16H.)
