Did we have a thread on the old UD, about some one afraid of being bitten by a bat. Well I bitten, my fault, trying to save a fallen bat. Well, when you have a friend who is an ER specialist doctor, and they insist you go to the ER, you end up being s pincushion.

Multiple immunoglobulin shots, because I am a bit heavy and they do it by weight,. And Rabies vaccines. And tetanus , for good measure.

Good call on getting treatment, should be multiple shots over weeks, at least it was for me. My horses were attacked by a rabid fox and had saliva all over their face that I had to wipe off. Even though I was cautious due to rabies concerns, my father insisted that I get the vaccine done because as we all know rabies tends to be fatal, not worth the risk however slight and being bitten by a bat would be an even greater risk!

Does no one else remember the thread on the old board where someone was terrified by the idea? I thought I remembered such, it came to mind after I got bitten.

Oh no! Nephew got bitten by a raccoon and had a summer of shots, every three weeks if I remember correctly. Glad they have it streamlined. Thanks for trying to help the bat.

Did you end up being able to get the bat tested for rabies? Yeah, yeah, I know, they must be dead to be tested. But just wondering. Good that you went ahead and acted on the presumption of rabies. How are things going?

Yes and I'm not sure it was being bitten by a bat or just that she had a mortal fear of getting rabies. I can picture her face, can't remember her screen name. If I'm thinking of the correct person she had a Lusitano, lived in New England….Sol was the horse and her name was Gabby?

The bat went to bat ER to be treated for human poisoning ;). It is recovering, but just cant get that nasty taste out if it's mouth. :D

At least your sense of humor is intact! Can't be too careful with bats. I don't know why every one is considered to possibly have rabies, but they are SO beneficial to the environment.

I don't think it would matter what species it was, because if it might transmit rabies then treatment is recommended. I know someone who picked up a little owl that punctured her skin with its talons, and her doctor told her she should have the rabies shots in case the owl's talons had come in contact with a rabid animal. She did, and was told at the time that she was protected for the rest of her life, which I hope is true because she was handling a feral cat last year.

3/4 of the way through the series and feeling washed out post injection. It's quite a challenge to the immune system. I wish I could take the night off.

Glad you are hanging in there, but I suppose you have no choice in the matter! I hate shots, and fear them probably as much as rabies itself. Rabies is endemic around here, the culprit typically being the skunk strain. And we, too, love and appreciate the bats---when they don't bite!
