Cataract surgery next week

Having my left cataract removed. I'm so excited, because I'm getting an intraocular lens to correct my distance vision and astigmatism! For the first time in 50 years I won't have to wear glasses, just readers. February 4 my right eye will be done. Of course insurance doesn't cover the corrective lens so I have out of pocket costs but it's totally worth it. The surgery is Thursday. I asked the MD (who I've known for 20 years) if I could ride my horse on Saturday and he said no, simply because there's risk factor of getting poked in the eye. But I can go to the barn next week wearing sunglasses to prvent dirt, etc getting in my eye.

I have always found it interesting that insurance does not cover corrective lens.

While many people dont have eye care insurance( conventional ophthalmic , not medical eye disease etc) those who do have eye insurance then need to have and consume potentially ever changing glasses lens prescriptions . Seems to me the corrective lens replacement is like preventive medicine for the eye.

I have early cataracts and must wait until they are bad enough to justify replacement. You can bet, for sure, that I will get corrective lens.

Good luck with your surgery. And don't take chances getting junk in your eye.

My farrier had cataract surgery on both eyes, one before T'giving and one later last month. He had such blurry vision he kept asking his wife where all the smoke was coming from in Walmart! Had to explain to the eye doc what a farrier was ;) and the type of work it involved. He was so excited after the first surgery, and after the second surgery claimed he no longer needed binoculars to see 900 yards to the neighbor's back deck on the next hill over. Hope you too will have Superman vision!

It is totally worth it. I had the surgery in August and it was not a big deal. And no, your eyes and your teeth are not part of your body according to insurance and medicare.

Also, I don't need glasses at all or contact lens.

Still baffles me. Particularly teeth, which when unhealthy are directly linked to increase risk to the heart.

Good luck, Paula! My surgeries were trouble free; I hope yours is also.

PSA - a heads up to anyone having LASIK surgery on your eyes. Be sure to keep a record of the corrections done to your eyes. I was not told at the time that they are required to keep those records for only a few years. By the time I had cataract surgery, my records were no longer available. The surgeon had to estimate what he had done years ago to my eyes, at a different clinic on the other side of the state. The LASIK corrections had been sizable; I was just on the edge of being eligible for LASIK.

I will take that lovely gray horse with the traditional flat tack. I’ll be able to see him/her in the pasture. More than once I’ve had to enlist a second set of eyes to find Miss A in pasture.

The surgery was Thursday and went without a hitch. I’m able to have corrective IOLs. My left eye is near perfect vision now. The right will be done the 4th. My sister spent the night with me. I’ve been tired and my eye aches but nothing abnormal. I’m wearing just readers which is an adjustment. Sadly, the sedation was the IV equivalent of a Valium. I expect a nice blast of Versed.

The day after surgery I asked Dr King when I could ride. He said when do you want to ride. I replied in 8 days. He hemmed a bit then gave me permission. I took that as he wasn’t thrilled so I won’t ride til 2 weeks after the next surgery. I plan on visiting the barn on Thursday. I bought a proper eyepatch on an elastic cord in order to keep out dust at the barn.

Thanks for the update and so very glad things went smoothly!

What will Miss A think when she sees "Pirate Paula" strolling down the barn aisle, eyepatch and all? Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum ;) Just be careful, matey!

Miss A will be like “where’s my carrots?” She sees me as an orange stick vending machine.

Second surgery was yesterday and it went without a hitch. No more glasses! I need readers but my distance vision is excellent. I’ll be able to find Ariel in the pasture! Although there is another chestnut TB mare her size who wears the same color and brand of blanket. Piney even cribs like Miss A but Piney wears a cribbing color in pasture. That is the only way I’ve been able to tell them apart.

Great news, I was wondering about this final surgery and how things have been going. Playing Pirate again, or just keeping away from barn dust until given the A-OK? ;)

After the first I decided not to ride until after the second. I ended up working only half days for the first week. Takes me lots of time to recover from surgery plus I was so afraid of getting my eye poked. Now the forecast is single digits for the next 7 days so I’ll be staying away. I plan on riding February 20....

It never occurred to me that the two procedures would take place so close together. Hard to get over how easy it is compared to days of yore.

Good to hear about your experience. My sister has put off her procedure due to COV.

My balance was slightly off between the first and second surgeries. The surgeries are done 2 weeks apart for that reason, so that the eyes are balanced within a close window. Now I’m wearing readers which is weird. I wore progressive lenses for decades.
