Neighbor's dog killed my beloved cat. An update.

Postby Moutaineer » Sat Apr 02, 2022 7:06 pm

I'm just so upset and angry.

The white trash renters next door have 3 pitbulls. Yesterday evening one of them jumped the fence and killed my sweet Siamese cat, who was quietly sunning herself on a rock just off my back deck.

Animal Control tell me that they can't take the dog away for that, just issue a citation and a fine.

Not a word of apology from next door, no offer to come help dig the grave, nothing.

My condolences for your loss. In Arizona we are required to fence things out, not fence things in. Animal control would likely have the same response here unless the animal was a repeated menace. I personally would have them write the citation even if it seems minimal because escalation or repeat offenses are much more likely to get real action and consequences.

We live in town, not on the open range.

Oh. Yes. The citation will be issued.

Even in town here since everything has grown out to envelope the various towns that make up the metro most areas still have their ordinances written with the focus of fencing things out. Seems counterintuitive but old habits die hard.

Given that you do live in town are there any ordinances on fence height that might prevent a recurrence? or if your laws/ordinances are more written for containment are there any fencing requirements that the dog's owner can be held to as a responsible pet owner? ACOs here are required to inspect fences regarding pet escapes especially if the dogs are deemed a menace - they can require owners to move objects away from fencing if their escape artists are using such objects to catapult over the fence.........just as an example.

My condolences. There are so many ill-behaved dogs in general. It is kind of scary.

Godspeed dear kitty.

So very, very sorry for this tragic loss :(. I hope there is some form of restitution that can be had. My guess is that these dogs, likely, couldn't even be trusted around people (neighbors), depending upon the circumstances. Seems like in too many locations, laws/ordinances end up protecting the perpetrators instead of the victims.

This is awful. Just awful and traumatic and wrong.

As a pit bull owner, my dog is a nanny to my bottle lambs and so it infuriates me when bad owners make my doggy look bad.

Oh how awful :( I have small dogs and I did have one that died as a result of a bigger dog bite. It's always my worst nightmare.

So so sorry, Mountaineer. I hope it was very quick for kitty’s sake. Damn those people who don’t manage their dogs. We have a pit mix who is the sweetest loving dog and gets along well with our three cats. Still, i would never ever trust her around a cat she doesn’t know. Again, my sympathies for you and your meezer.

The horrible renters and their horrible dogs moved out last weekend, thank God. Its been unbearable for the last 6 weeks. But who knows what joys we will get in their place, so I am busily planting an eventually impenetrable shrubbery between the two properties. Its nice to be able to work outside again without feeling threatened.

Our lawyer is working on the landlord. We want him to put in a decent fence if he's going to have all and sundry over there. So far, a deafening silence. I'm sure he thinks he has fulfilled his obligations with the removal of the tenants.

And in a happy note, we have two lovely Siamese kittens joining our family when they are old enough to leave mum, which will be in about 5 weeks. Catio plans are underway to keep them safe.

Our older female Himalayan has been very lonely and sad, so I think she will soon become adopted auntie.

There will be pictures...

Fingers crossed for good renters! There is a house on my usual running route that seems to be a rental allowing large dogs, but with an inadequate (chicken wire) gate. I took to carrying a sharp stick that I would stash in the bushes after I passed their house after some labs dove under the fence and had a go at my dog. Thankfully the current residents have put in a proper fence.

Can't wait to see pics of the new kitties!
Keep calm and canter on.

What a relief and a good update. Catio will be wonderful, too! Lots of cool designs out there. Not much consolation, but at least you appear to have some type of recourse for this horrible transgression. Out in the county where I live, seems the morons and cretins get away with every possible infraction of decency and respect for others. Pics needed when kitties are in their new home!

I went the catio route after seeing a coyote run by my house at 9 am with a cat in its mouth. We used a system like this so we could fence in a large unused part of our yard. https://www.deerbusters.com/fence-kits/ ... m-6-x-100/
One thing that we've learned is that cats are escape artists. The vendors will say that they can't climb upside down. Lies. Then we had to install a roof after a neighbor cat fell in and got trapped.
Looking forward to kitten pics and hoping you get good neighbors.

Reading what happened to your beloved Meezer makes me irate and sick at the same time. I can't even think what I might have done in that situation, but it wouldn't have been pretty. I'm so sorry for your loss. I have two Meezers (not fancy purebreds, but Meezer look-alikes), and they're so dear to me, and SUCH awesome characters. Hopefully - and certainly! - your kittens will be just like that. Nothing like a Meezer singing the song of his people, loud and clear! LOL! :)

Snowhorse, those two are beauties! My house is much too quiet with just Miss Puff wandering around.

Dreadful neighbors obviously still have possession of the house. I hope only until the end of the month. She came by and hung an enormous "Trump 2024" sign in the front yard during the week and played with the dogs out back.
Just bizarre. I guess she thinks we got her kicked out, which we really didn't. Landlord had indicated to us prior to this whole shitshow that he wasn't going to renew their lease.

I'm going to start a new happy thread for kitteh pictures.
