Alternates to flax?

Any suggestions. I've been feeding flax, either whole seed or stabilized ground, for a long time for weight, coat, feet, etc. and think it helps. The prices have gone insane, though. I cannot find the stabilized, which I got a 25 lb bag for $33, and the seed used to be $30 for a 50 lb bag and is now $65.

I already give oil daily.

I'm really getting little scared with how much costs have gone up and keeping horses, so trying to do what I can do.

For many years I fed flax seed oil capsules. I bought them from Costco. It was easier, cheaper and my horses ate them readily.

Thanks, but I can't imagine that would be cheaper. It would be about 12 a day, which for the $15 price, only lasts 25 days. Normally the 25 lb stabilized flax I get for $30 lasts three horses about 3 months.

If you're feeding flax largely for omega 3s, chia seeds or camelina oil are very good options. But I don't know how costs break down.

I use calf mana but not just for the linseed meal, but for the anise and highly digestible protein and probiotics

I used to use Calf Manna, and I think it's available. That might be a good solution for the older mare, esp. Maybe I'll look into that. I don't think chia seeds are available in bulk.

It's not super high in omega 3 but it seems sufficient and cost effective.

I love Calf Manna. Oldie but goodie. It's been an integral part of my rescue rehabs. Definitely a "little dab will do ya" kind of thing, it doesn't take much.

I feed rice bran, as Potters is wildly allergic to flax.
