Girths for sensitive skin TB
Girths for sensitive skin TB
Haven't had any girth sores in a few months but one appeared yesterday
I ride in a wintec so also use a wintec shaped girth. Thinking about getting a sheepskin cover or trying a string girth?
In your experiences, what has helped in preventing sores with sensitive horses?

Re: Girths for sensitive skin TB
My favorite girth before they stopped making them was the German made Westip.
The closest I could find is by Passier. BTW - this is an excellent discount price as I paid $200 for mine. This girth is VERY stretchy so you may even have to go down a size.

Re: Girths for sensitive skin TB
I like the Westip elastic girth, but sometimes it seemed to "grab" the hair my WB and make him uncomfortable. I made a tube cover for it out of very plush black polar fleece that put an end to that problem.
BTW, sometime Westip girths still show up on ebay. There is a new 30" black girth on there now.
Some people swear by mohair girths for horses that get sores.

Re: Girths for sensitive skin TB
Once I started using real sheepskin girth covers I no longer had this problem with my sensitive thoroughbred.
Re: Girths for sensitive skin TB
BTDT, fleece didn't work as well as string/cord girths for eliminating girth rubs.

I use a LeMieux girth, seems to not cause my horse any problems. Maybe try just a sleeve?

Flight - I had a look at those. I have a shaped girth so not as simple to get a sleeve :\.
Think I might try a string girth, if I can find one here! All my searches so far have come up with only cinch type.

Dover, dressage extensions and actionridertack.com all have string/cord girths.

I live in Australia.. Thought I had added my location when I joined whoops!
Re: Girths for sensitive skin TB
String girth... The only other girth I used to have success with was one of those Cottage Craft, plain padded girths. The shaped/curved, Mattes, luxurious sheepskin number - rubbed raw patches with one short ride. No issues with her string girth! I had to import them as so difficult to find here (NZ) esp as she's really quite little so I needed a fairly short one (40" IIRC). Not very expensive though & easy to clean/wash.

I use and would recommend that you try this one: https://www.smartpakequine.com/pt/smart ... girth-6118
When my boy first came I used a wintec girth and he had rubs all over. I switched to this one from smartpak and haven't had a problem of any sort since.
They also have a summer-oriented version : https://www.smartpakequine.com/pt/smart ... irth-10573
I haven't tried this one, but it looks like a similar build.

Look at endurance rider tack shops online or brick and mortar. they've discovered these girths and that they don't cause rubs!

I love my Westip too...
I've also had good luck with the Soft Touch girth (I have both a long and a short girth from them). Depending on the size you're looking for, VTO seems to have them on sale... http://www.vtosaddlery.com/Merchant2/me ... Am_B8P8HAQ

I bought a contoured fleece girth for my thin skinned Arab. Toklat shaped fleece dressage girth- $40 at Riders Warehouse I like it a lot. They also have Stubben cord girths there as well.
Re: Girths for sensitive skin TB
String girth…..love my leather girths but my pony didn't feel the same way. He is very happy with a string girth.
Re: Girths for sensitive skin TB
I use a balding girth for both dressage and jumping. It eliminated girth sores/rubs and allows excellent shoulder freedom. I got mine from Hastilow USA but maybe you could find a maker in Australia? http://www.hastilowusa.com/girths/balding-girth.html
